Majestic Vulcan

P8230028.JPG

While attending the 40th Wedding Celebrations of Mrs Fleet’s Uncle and Aunt today we were treated to the magnificent sight of Vulcan XH558 on its way back to Brize after displaying and flying past at various locations in the South of England.

The last time I was conscious of seeing one of these stunning delta-winged nuclear bombers airborne would have been at Abingdon Airshow as a small boy – probably thirty years ago now. It was wonderful to see the last flying Vulcan in action again.

Sadly I didn’t have my telephoto lens on the camera so the image is very poor, but what a glorious sight nonetheless.

There’s one at Sarfend Airport. They fire it up once a year, and taxi it along the runway. Draws farzands of people. Lord knows how much they’d need to spend on it to get it airborne, but even as a static display, it is awesome.

Those things are seriously loud. A slow flypast at an airshow makes your ears bleed. I speak from experience.

    What?

  3. Used to see them every day. Garden backed on to Avroes (now BAE) in Woodford (Cheshire). Security so slack you could get through the fence and look at them close up. The noise when they took off was fantastic. Loved them. Still do.

Lived in Woodstock Oxon when they were testing Concorde. Used to fly over our house so low still they still had the undercarriage down. And I guess I am one of the few people who have ever been above a Concorde in flight – they used to conduct low flying exercises over Oxfordshire, and I was walking the Ridgeway one day (to pick up 2K of hash we had stashed up there:-)), watching it from above.

Family cricket match down in Kent in July we had a Spitfire fly over.

And I am not even a plane buff…

Killem – seems a bit of a travesty really – to make the poor old beast trundle up and down the runway!

6000 – It was pretty noisy even from thousands of feet below it the other day! Pure turbojet engines are noisy!

Elby – They are majestic things – it’s nice to see that one is able to fly again, albeit by the skin of it’s teeth it appears. I used to love to see Concorde coming into and out of Heathrow when it was still flying. We see the Battle or Britain memorial flight around our way quite regularly, which is great. Love the sound!

  5. Mighty noises, the Vulcan and Concorde.

    We like 🙂
